GREENING FOOD PRODUCTION AND CONSUMPTION: TRANSFORMING THE HIGHLY-POLLUTING AND RESOURCE-CONSUMING EDIBLE BAMBOO SHOOT INDUSTRY INTO A SUSTAINABLE VALUE CHAIN IN CHINA

This 4-year project funded by the European Commission under the Switch Asia Programme addresses the urgent needs in China for increasing safety and green practices in agro-food processing. More precisely, it aims to transform the highly polluting and resource-consuming edible bamboo shoot industry into a sustainable value chain.

IFOAM is partnering with the Zhejiang Agriculture & Forestry University (ZAFU), the International Network for Bamboo and Rattan (INBAR) as well as the Zhejiang and Sichuan Provincial Associations for Small and Medium Enterprises (ZJSMEs) and the Associations for the Bamboo Industry of Anji, Zhejiang and Yibin, Sichuan to implement this project. Read more about the partners.

The actions focus on:

  1. Reviving consumption of safe and eco-friendly preserved foods through market studies, food research, and public campaigns
  2. Developing less polluting and safe food produced by green SMEs in Zhejiang and Sichuan Provinces
  3. Formulating and enforcing policy for pollution control and for safe processed foods
  4. Disseminating, transferring, and replicating successful experiences and models to other SMEs of preserved vegetables, fruits and meats

In the frame of the project, IFOAM leads trainings in Zhejiang and Sichuan Provinces (China), for farmers, processors, traders, researchers, and government officials. The training aims to establish pilot programs on organic production and market development of bamboo and other species. Over 30 persons attended the one pictured here, in June 2014.
